Rural Voices: Marian Boswall
RURAL VOICES with Marian Boswall
Designing for the Long View: Regenerative Landscapes and the Future of the Rural
What does it mean to shape land not just for today, but for the next hundred years?
In this special Rural Voices talk, leading landscape architect and horticulturalist Marian Boswall shares her vision for regenerative design - an approach that works with ecology, history and community to create landscapes that are both beautiful and resilient.
Marian is known for her deeply contextual work: restoring flood plains, reimagining farmsteads, and guiding projects in some of the country’s most sensitive historic settings. Whether advising estates, collaborating with land stewards, or designing contemporary interventions within ancient landscapes, her focus is always to uncover what is special about a place and invest in its long-term health.
A former lecturer in Historic Garden Conservation at the University of Greenwich, Fellow of the Landscape Institute and co-founder of the Sustainable Landscape Foundation, Marian combines practical expertise with a generous, thoughtful philosophy. Her award-winning books, Sustainable Garden and The Kindest Garden, explore how our gardens and shared spaces can nurture biodiversity, restore soils, and care for us in return.
In the spirit of our Future Rural theme, Marian will explore how regenerative thinking can guide the evolution of rural communities. How do we design with flood, drought and biodiversity loss in mind? How can local materials, local knowledge and long-term stewardship reshape the places we live? And what does it look like to treat land not as a backdrop, but as a living partner?
This is a chance to hear from one of the country’s leading voices in landscape design about building a countryside that is not only productive, but restorative - rooted in respect for the past and hopefulness for the future.

Rural Voices: Geoff Bowles
RURAL VOICES with Geoff Bowles, Ivy House Dairy Farm
A Diverse Future for Farming
You may well be familiar with the iconic Jersey cow image on Ivy House Farm’s locally produced milk, cream and butter. In 1982 Geoff and Kim Bowles moved to Ivy House Farm in the small village of Beckington on the edge of Frome, and began farming a modest herd of Friesian cows.
As the landscape changed and the price of milk continued to drop, they realised something had to change or they could no longer survive as farmers. They decided to diversify. Geoff's Uncle John gave them 20 Jersey Cows and a cream separator. 30 years later Ivy House Farm is home to 120 cows, supplying customers all over the south of England.
In August’s Rural Voices, Geoff Bowles will tell us his story of farming, family and diversification, which has enabled the farm to survive in uncertain times. This is part of our “future of the rural” series of talks, exploring what the next chapter of creative, resilient rural life could look like — and how communities like ours can shape it.

Rural Voices: Tom Lewis
RURAL VOICES with Tom Lewis
Another Year with the Wildlife on the Longleat Estate
Last September, Tom came to tell us all about his work with the amazing wildlife on the Longleat Estate. From following a family of beavers as they create a biodiversity oasis around their incredible system of dams and pools, to surveying the estate for bats and getting familar with the birds and other animals that call the farmland, woods and parkland home - it was a fascinating talk. This year he is back with an update! Tom will take us on a tour of all things, large and small, with videos and stories of some of the incredible wildlife that call the estate home but also some of the wildlife we are missing.
Dr Tom Lewis is a conservation biologist with a PhD in Conservation Biology from the University of Sheffield, an MSc in Endangered Species Recovery and Conservation from Nottingham Trent University and a BSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Southampton. His doctoral research focused on using bioacoustics and direct monitoring to improve assessments of threatened species in tropical regions. He started his career bird ringing with the BTO in Berkshire, but since then, he has worked on projects in Mauritius, Sao Tome, and Costa Rica. At the end of 2023, Tom moved to Frome and has been leading Longleat's Conservation and Research programmes.

Rural Voices: Dr Garry Phillipson
RURAL VOICES with Dr Garry Phillipson, Astrologer
ASTROLOGY AND THE FUTURE RURAL
For many of us in the west today, astrology brings to mind the daily star-sign column — a light read over morning coffee. This however is a much simplified variant of a craft that has assumed many forms in different parts of the world and has fascinated humankind for millennia.
In May’s Rural Voices, Dr Garry Phillipson invites us to look again at this ancient craft and its relevance to rural life today. Drawing on vivid moments from the history of Western astrology, he’ll explore how people have long used the skies to make sense of change, uncertainty and the future.
Garry will also turn his attention closer to home, asking what astrology might reveal about the future of the Horningsham community— and how symbolic ways of thinking can open up new possibilities for imagining what comes next for small rural communities.
Dr Garry Phillipson is the author of Astrology in the Year Zero and earned his PhD for research into astrology with the University of Wales Trinity St David, where he now tutors in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology.
Expect a thought-provoking session that blends history, storytelling and fresh perspectives on how we navigate the times ahead.
